Why Invest?
The Heritage Community Foundation has designed a $26 Million A to Z Campaign to help support the Alberta Online Encyclopedia-a Centennial Legacy Project for 2005. The Foundation's mandate is to link people with heritage through discovery and learning. The Online Encyclopedia (found at www.albertasource.ca) draws on the resources of heritage institutions and organizations to create multimedia websites that educate and inform about the historical, natural, cultural, scientific and technological heritage of Alberta.
Heritage institutions and organizations preserve, study and interpret heritage in all of its aspects. The Foundation, using the most current information technologies, develops dynamic websites and customized learning resources for teachers and students in partnership with museums, archives and other heritage organizations, and other media, community and corporate partners.
Our goal is to create an information highway linking all people to Alberta’s rich heritage.
We are the leader in the development of learning resources for the World Wide Web.
Together we will increase awareness of Alberta’s historical, natural, cultural, scientific, and technological importance.
In addition, the Foundation has become a centre of excellence in research in contested aspects of our history and diversity. This includes partnerships with Aboriginal organizations to create dynamic websites that explore the history, culture, traditions and achievements of First Nations and Métis Peoples as well as educational materials that build community identity and pride. Other research projects involve the Rwandan, Black, Latin American, West Balkan and Muslim communities.
Other projects engage children and youth in their heritage and encourage visitation to museums and use of archival resources for experiential learning.
Why Now?
Today's children and youth need reliable, accurate information to help them grow into committed citizens.
Our heritage is a valuable resource for understanding the past and solving the problems of tomorrow.
Heritage content must be readily available through today's communications medium-the World Wide Web.
Teachers, parents and students need easy access to Alberta's heritage content through the Alberta Online Encyclopedia in the classroom, at home and on-the-run.
